Schlumberger Announces Plans To Lay Off 11,000 Workers
Just yesterday, Schlumberger announced plans to lay off 11,000 workers, which could be a precursor of what can be expected of other oil field services companies. This will leave many more people in the lurch as they struggle to find alternative jobs or look to enter a different industry altogether. Many oilfield workers who are affected by the layoffs and concerned about the continued volatility in the oil and gas industry will consider jobs in other industries, like the construction industry.
Collin Eaton said in a recent blog:
Oil field services firm Schlumberger announced Thursday it plans to ax another 11,000 workers, kicking off what could be a second major wave of layoffs across the oil industry. The nine-month oil slump has cost the energy industry more than 120,000 jobs so far, according to oil field staffing firm Swift Worldwide Resources.”
It Is The Roughnecks Who Are Affected The Most
The roughnecks and derickhands are the ones who get impacted the most, as their jobs are the first to be axed. Oil companies decide to delay or shut down oil rigs in the wake of low crude prices. This translates to job cuts at oil rigs, which leaves roughnecks to fend for themselves, as they struggle to find jobs in other industries. Getting a college degree is important as it will reduce chances of facing job cuts and will help you land another job with ease.
Dan Molinski said in a recent article:
“While layoffs in the industry have hit office workers and high-skilled employees such as geologists and petroleum engineers, it is the roughnecks who are feeling the brunt of the cuts. “The closer your job is to the actual oil well, the more in jeopardy you are of losing that job,” said Tim Cook, oil and gas recruiter and president of PathFinder Staffing in Houston. “Each time an oil rig gets shut down, all the jobs at the work site are gone. They disappear.”
