What Millennials Look For In Oil And Gas Companies?

What Millennials Look For In Oil And Gas Companies?Millennials, who are comfortable using technology, are also known to be impatient, because they live a fast-paced life, ask for what they want and have a no-holds barred attitude to life. Oil and gas companies need to make changes to their performance review and appraisal processes to accommodate the needs of this generation. Read on to learn what millennials look for in oil and gas companies.

Millennials Want Training And Development Opportunities

Millennials are looking for oil and gas employers who are invested in their employees and offer suitable training and development opportunities. They value constant feedback from their managers and need regular assessments on their performance instead of annual appraisals.

Valerie Jones shared in a recent article on rigzone:

“Rigzone’s recent Ideal Employer Survey found that millennials value “solid training and development programs” and a “commitment to health and safety” the most when considering their ideal employer. The global survey was conducted between July and September and garnered nearly 8,500 respondents in more than 100 countries.”

Candidates are also looking for better safety and a commitment to health when it comes to choosing their ideal employer.

Millennials Want Interesting And Challenging Work

The survey showed that millennials are looking for stimulating and challenging work. This sentiment was also echoed by leading oil and gas executives. Unlike earlier when candidates wanted a cushy job where they can retire, millennials are looking for exciting and challenging projects and want to be associated with a cause.

Oil and gas companies need to market what they have achieved and talk about their accomplishments. The oil and gas industry has lifted people from poverty and fuelled the growth of the economy.

Andreas Exarheas quoted two senior oil and gas executives in a recent Rigzone article:

“The oil and gas industry must be presented as stimulating and challenging to inspire millennials, Oil & Gas UK Chief Executive Deirdre Michie told Rigzone… Speaking at the Oil & Money conference held in London last week, BP Group Chief Executive Bob Dudley, told attendees that the industry needs to do a better job of talking about the prosperity the sector brings to countries, the community development projects it delivers and the work it is leading to address carbon emissions.”

Millennials are looking for employers who are invested in their growth. They want to be part of the decision-making process and look for constant feedback from their managers.

They are also open to adapt to new technology and changes in systems. They find it easy to transition, when the purpose of the new technology or system is explained to them. Communication is key to getting the buy-in of millennials on policy changes or new tools. The oil and gas company will need to adapt and make changes in their management style to inspire the loyalty of millennials.
