Be Honest
There is absolutely no point in lying or telling half-truths to a hiring manager. A hiring manager can figure out if you are lying simply by making a couple phone calls or sending an email. You want to make sure that you tell your side of the story and take ownership of anything you might have done wrong in another office. People prefer honesty to finding out you were lying after the fact.
Ask A Couple Questions
Do not be afraid to ask questions in response to questions. Yes, you must answer the questions that you are asked, but you must also ask questions when they come up. You want to have an open dialogue with the hiring manager, and you want to make sure that you get all your questions answered before you leave. A free conversation is helpful, and having all the right information will make it easier to make a decision.
Know The Company
You may be prepared to work in the oil industry, but you need to know the company that you are interviewing with. You do not need to know intimate details of the company, but you do need to know how the company works. If you know basic information about the company, you will be able to make some observations about the company that will help you succeed in the interview.
Know Yourself
You need to make sure that you understand your own strengths and weaknesses. It is hard to have a good interview when you cannot be honest about yourself. No one is perfect, and a hiring manager knows that about you. You want to be sure that you have room for improvement because that means you can be trained to do more things within the company.
When you are ready with all these items, your interview is going to be much better than most other people. You can wow the hiring manager because you understand how to conduct an interview, are willing to talk and know that you are not a perfect specimen.
