Responsibilities of a Directional Engineer
• Technical Support
Because a directional engineer will tend to be one of the most informed members of the construction team, he or she will be able to provide a great deal of technical support to the other members of the crew. This could include making sure that the correct tools are used and that all of the machinery is functioning perfectly.
• Staying Up-to-Date on Technique
One of the most important tasks that a directional engineer has is to keep up-to-date regarding the most current techniques for both directional drilling and surveying. By not letting this responsibility fall by the wayside, a directional engineer is able to ensure that the project is being completed as efficiently as possible.
• Well Planning
A directional engineer is critical in the planning of the well because he or she is able to take the information that was gathered during a land surveying procedure and combine it with drilling techniques to design a well that will meet the needs of the customer and not undermine the land. After a directional engineer gains a lot of experience with well drilling, he or she will be able to plan high-quality wells more quickly.
• Prepare Final Reports
There are two different reports that a directional engineer needs to prepare. The first is the end-of-well report, which details the specifications of the well, how long it took the well to be created, and any other information that is necessary to record. The second report that needs to be created is the Client Final Report, which will deliver a lot of the same information to the client, as well as the final costs of the well.
• Inventory Management
Building a well requires a lot of tools and supplies. One of the many directional driller jobs is to make sure that all of the requisite supplies are onsite at the correct times. This will allow the flow of the project to continue smoothly and not experience any delays. If one type of material is being reduced at a faster rate than originally anticipated, the directional driller will need to order more supplies in time for them to arrive before the original supply dwindles.
• Communicate with the Client
A directional engineer will need to be in constant contact with the client in order to ensure that all of the specifications that a client might have regarding the well are met, and that the client is kept fully informed of the well’s progress.
