There are many laws and industry regulations governing workplace health and safety. Failing to maintain compliance can result in serious fines and other punitive actions. The job requires you to stay informed about all these laws and regulations.
Lives Are At Risk
The primary reason health and safety jobs are seen as demanding is because real lives are at risk every day. Working in this job makes you at least partially responsible for ensuring the safety of everyone in the workplace or on the worksite. You will have to test and review equipment, develop safety policies and possibly train employees. Mistakes or oversights could lead to injuries or fatalities. This responsibility can be overwhelming for some people.
Travel Could Be Necessary
A health and safety officer for a larger company might have to travel extensively during certain parts of the year. This can take you away from home for a week or several months at a time depending on the extent of operations. You might have to personally visit each facility or worksite to ensure that everything is in order and everyone is obeying the rules. Extensive travel can be very disruptive.
Constantly Evolving Technology
Another part of health and safety jobs involves understanding how to use, maintain and test the different safety equipment found in facilities or remote worksites. You will need to learn about a variety of sensors and other pieces of equipment that constantly keep workers safe. The technology used in safety equipment can change over time as new techniques and devices are developed. You have to keep up with constantly evolving technology as part of your core job duties.
Potentially Risky Worksites
The reality is that many of the jobs that require health and safety positions have potentially dangerous work environments. The same factors that could injure employees are a risk too you as well. You might have to spend long hours in risky locations just to check that everything is safe and secure. This makes the job demanding because you might have to endure harsh conditions while doing your job.
Extreme Attention to Detail Is Required
A final reason these jobs are thought of as demanding is that extreme attention to detail is required. You are going to have to carefully think everything through when creating health and safety policies or processes. If you are installing, inspecting or maintaining equipment, then you will need to scrutinize every small component and pay close attention to all readings. This is highly stressful for many people.
