Operating Engineers
These positions generally do not require a degree, but you must have graduated from high school with a diploma or GED to qualify. On the job training is common for operating engineers. You will be required to operate power construction equipment, tractors, front-end loaders, pumps and derricks.
Operating engineers are also responsible for following safety regulations and avoiding potential hazards such as utility lines or falling objects. They also make sure that safety and health stands are precisely followed.
Operating engineers must work outdoors with exposure to all weather conditions. There is a lot of considerable time spent using tools and equipment. The starting pay is $13 an hour, but you can work up to $25 per hour with experience. Keep in mind that you must work outdoors in very hot or cold temperatures.
Pipe Layers
Pipe layers are responsible for using levels or lasers to check slopes for conformance to spec requirements. You may also cut pipes, seal joints, use welding equipment, cement or glue. Other names for this position include skilled laborer, machine operator, laborer or equipment operator. You may also be exposed to high noise levels while on the job. The starting pay is $13.50, and experienced workers can expect $24.50 per hour. Pipe layers also lay pipe for drains and water mains at the construction site.
Construction and Building Inspectors
This position requires you to examine structures using engineering skills to determine compliance with specifications. They also examine structures to ensure they meet regulatory building codes. Construction and building inspectors may also issue violations and stop-work orders to recommend rectifications.
They also examine wiring, plumbing and electrical circuits to ensure the construction site is compliant to legal and safety requirements. You must have completed high school or hold a GED. You may also be required to have work experience in a related occupation. The starting pay is $15 per hour and climbs to $26.50 with experience.
Wellhead Pumpers
This position requires you to operate power pumps to produce the flow of oil or gas from wells on the construction site. You will also monitor control panels, shut off wells according to production schedules and perform routine maintenance on equipment and vehicles. You must have at least a high school diploma or GED.
Wellhead pumpers start at $11.50 an hour and work up to $20.50 with experience. You may be potentially exposed to contaminants. Wellhead pumpers must work outdoors in all weather conditions. They also repair gas and oil gauges and meters at the job site.
