Job Security Prized Possession In The Oil And Gas Industry

Job security is considered to be a prized possession among workers in the oil and gas industry. Workers are not as keen about getting a bonus as much as they are about keeping their jobs. On the other hand, the construction industry is facing a shortage of workers, which is good news for laid off oil and gas workers. Read on to learn more.

Oil And Gas Employees Value Job Security Over Good Salaries

The plunging crude oil prices around the globe has changed priorities for workers in the oil and gas industry. With many oil and gas companies laying off thousands of workers, a majority of workers are said to value job security over getting a bonus. According to a recent survey by Mercer, it was found that 58% of those surveyed were satisfied with their salaries, echoing the growing unease among workers about the current state of affairs in the industry.

Rhiannon Meyers said in a recent article:

“More than 1,800 industry employees recently asked to rank various workplace benefits said they valued job security above good salaries, bonuses and retirement packages, according to the April survey by Mercer, a human resources consulting firm.”

Construction Offers Respite To Laid Off Oil And Gas Workers

The construction industry is experiencing a shortage of labour and offers jobs for laid off oil and gas workers. The huge number of construction projects in Houston requires workers. Some companies are even providing subsidies for those people who are ready to re-skill themselves to take on jobs in the construction industry.

Matthew Waller said in a recent article:

“One option in another field is construction. Randy Walker, vice president at S&B Engineers and Constructors, said he is looking at a shortage of tens of thousands of workers because of massive amounts of construction projects around Houston and down into Corpus Christi. Projects include power plants, commercial buildings and refineries. Walker said some companies, depending on the size, may subsidize people learning a new skill.”

Truck driving is another skill that is said to be in demand. Although the pay is comparatively lesser than the oil and gas jobs, these jobs will help pay off your monthly utility bills.

Oil and gas workers are concerned about job security and are looking for an alternative career option, in case they are given the pink slip. Employers should ideally look at retaining workers instead of doling out pay raises and giving out bonuses.
