How Can Oil And Gas Workers Be Better Prepared To Face Job Losses

oil-and-gas-workersWith leading oilfield service companies including Schlumberger, Halliburton, Baker Hughes and Weatherford announcing plans to lay off workers, oil and gas workers find themselves in a tough position. In such a scenario, it is recommended for workers to mentally prepare themselves and brace themselves to deal with the situation and look for alternate employment.

Expect Lower Wages Or Hike In Pay

Oil and gas workers should remain realistic about the situation and be prepared to receive lower wages, when they are looking for jobs in the present situation. In a recent survey, it was found that the oil and gas industry has experienced the lowest annual wage growth. Don’t expect to get a good pay hike at the moment.  Make the most of the opportunities you have to establish yourself as a valuable worker.

Ryan Holeywell said in a recent article:

“Falling oil prices and a slowdown in the energy sector have meant stagnant oil and gas wages, with workers in the Houston area taking the biggest hit, according to a new study.

The oil and gas industry saw the lowest annual wage growth of any industry, just 0.8 percent based on first quarter figures analysed by PayScale Inc., which tracks wage data.”

Oil And Gas Workers Should Stay Positive And Be Aggressive In Their Job Search

Oil and gas workers with a number of years’ experience in the industry should ideally stay positive, in spite of the current downturn in the industry. They should surround themselves with people who are positive and motivate them in their search for a new job.

In a recent interview with Fuelfix, Melissa Williams said that oil and gas workers who are laid off should be aggressive in their job search.  They should update their resumes and send them to job boards and take advantage of social network sites like LinkedIn. These provide workers with useful networking opportunities.

Melissa Williams, recruiting manager for Cenergy, an energy sector consulting, safety and inspections firm said in a recent article:

“I also tell them to be positive about yourself. You’re good at what you do. I know it sounds childish, but these guys feel really beat up. We keep reminding them they’re good. I also say let’s get real aggressive to make sure you’re going to the job boards. We want to place them in jobs, absolutely, but we understand there are great job boards too. LinkedIn is huge on networking groups. We’re telling them to be prepared.”

This article shares some tips on how oil and gas workers should be better prepared to face job losses and find jobs. Although it can be a challenge to cope with the situation, it can be easily overcome with sufficient preparation.
