Put Your Resume Out There
There is nothing wrong with having your current resume on job recruiting sites. You can inform your boss that you are not actively seeking other employment, but you can keep your resume online all the same. Also, you need to make sure you are applying to jobs that look interesting to you. People who take in your resume may pass it on to someone else, and you could be discovered by a recruiter because of someone you both talked to.
Join Associations
Every organization or association that is tied to your industry is a group you should join. Most recruiters are going to go through the directory of a trade organization looking for good people. They may see your name, look you up and contact you if you are right for a job they need to fill.
Understand The Process
A recruiter is supposed to screen you before they ever present you to one of their clients. This process is something you need to be engaged in at all times. You do not want to get out of practice in taking job interviews or taking screening exams. Taking a short interview with a recruiter will help you remain practiced in interviewing, but the process also helps you keep your name out there. The recruiter may keep your name, and they may contact you with a better job opportunity in the future.
It Is Industry Specific
When you are recruited by someone, they are recruiting in a specific industry. If you are willing to work outside the industry you are currently in, you must be willing to talk to more than one recruiter. A recruiter in a field unrelated to your own may have a job for you that is perfect for you, but you will never know if you do not put yourself out there. The recruiter will find you online, and you must be willing to listen.
Your career does not hinge only on the job you have right now. You may be recruited for a better job in the future, but you will never know about these new jobs if you are not willing to work with people. Listen to a recruiter, take the interview and let the opportunities come to you.
