When you have a poor GPA during your college career, you may not worry about it while you are still in school. However, once you graduate and start looking for a job, your GPA starts to become a much more serious subject. You may feel like there is no way for you to get an electrical engineering job with a low GPA. However, that is simply not the case. Remember that a 2.0 GPA means that your grades were average during college. If you are looking to get an oil and gas job with a low GPA, follow these tips to improve your chances.

Don’t List Your GPA on Your Resume

There is no law that states that you have to list your GPA on your resume. In fact, most resume writing experts recommend that their clients do not list their GPA on their resumes unless it was truly outstanding. You can simply list the school and degree that you earned along with the year of graduation on your resume. In many cases, you will not be asked what your GPA was during the hiring process.

Stress Your GPA in Engineering Classes

If you are required to disclose your GPA to a potential employer, it does not mean that you are out of luck if it is on the low side. If you had a good GPA in your engineering classes, make sure to stress that fact when you are applying for the job. The grades that you earned during your engineering classes are much more important to potential employers than the grades you earned in classes outside your major.

Stress Extracurricular Activities

If you did a lot of extracurricular activities while you were in college, make sure that you list them on your resume. Not only will this make you look better in the eyes of the people reading your resume, but you can also point to these extracurricular activities as a cause for your grades not being as high as they could have been otherwise.

The Power of Internships

Sometimes, you may struggle to find the ideal electrical engineer jobs when you are burdened with a low GPA. You don’t have to let that stop you though. If you are having trouble getting hired for the position you want, think about doing an internship instead. Although internships are usually performed for little or no pay, they often lead to job offers that would otherwise be unavailable to you. Undertaking an internship is one of the best ways that people with low GPAs can overcome the disadvantage their poor grades cause them.

Retake a Few Courses

If you find that a few courses that you did bad in are dragging down your overall GPA, think about retaking them. At many colleges, students have the option to retake a class and only have the second grade they earn count towards their GPA. If you bump a couple courses from failing grades to A’s, it will greatly improve your overall GPA.
