Common Mistakes That Candidates Should Avoid In Job Interviews
Some candidates can get their dressing right, create resumes without any spelling mistakes and show up on time, but still end up making silly mistakes that can result in them losing out on their job opportunity. Here are some common mistakes that candidates will do well to avoid to find success in their job search.
Graduating Late With No Work Experience
If you have no job experience and have graduated late, recruiters will likely look you over. Interviewers look for the dedication, loyalty and teamwork skills that you develop when you held a job. They don’t want to invest in training you, if you have don’t have the skills needed to accomplish tasks. Having related work experience is a big plus point, if you want to work in a particular sector.
Jacquelyn Smith said in a recent article:
“Reddit user creaoiumm – a lawyer – says they are tired of seeing applications from law-school students who are over 26 years old and have no job experience (not even babysitting!).
Instead, he says their resumes tend to be filled with different hobbies or trips they took during the summer. “As someone who started working at age 16, I’ll admit I think less of someone in their late 20s who has never held any kind of job, however small.”
Getting The Names Mixed Up
There can be nothing more embarrassing than getting the interviewer’s name wrong. It shows your lack of attention when it comes to the details. Don’t be afraid to ask the interviewer to repeat their name. Ask for the interviewer’s name before you actually meet for the interview. This way you will not have any surprises with the pronunciation and can focus on nailing the interview.
Not Preparing For The Interview
If you have made it through to the second round of interview, it is no reason to become complacent. You still need to do your homework and research the company well. Find out what are the latest products that were launched in the market recently and the latest developments in the company. Go through the company press releases and be updated about any changes in the company strategy.
As shared in a recent blog on USAtoday.com,
“It’s easy to assume that you can stop researching the company because you’ve made it to this stage. What else is there to know, right? The only thing you have to do in this round is continue being your delightful self. Yes to continue being your delightful self, but no to thinking you’re all set to just waltz into the office. This is definitely a scenario in which the more you know, the better.”
Knowing some of the common mistakes made by candidates in job interviews will prepare candidates to avoid them. It takes attention to detail and a focussed approach for candidates to make a mark in job interviews.
