Your Guide To Gas Injection And Its Role In Enhanced Oil Recovery
Learn all about gas injection and the role it plays in oil and gas production. Where is it used and how does it help? Crude oil production can be broadly divided into three different phases – primary, secondary and tertiary recovery. In the primary phase of oil production, the underground pressure in the reservoir is sufficient to bring the oil to the surface. Production at an oil and gas well wanes after a period of time, due to decreased pressure. As a result of this, the remaining hydrocarbons present in the reservoir or formation are trapped underground. This is where the second phase of oil production-secondary phase kicks in. External pressure is used to force the trapped oil to the surface. There are three distinct secondary recovery methods including water injection, gas lift and gas injection. Gas injection is a secondary production method that is used to increase production of an oil and gas well.
In this method, carbon dioxide or nitrogen gas is injected through the injection wells, which helps in increasing the pressure in an oil and gas well. The gas that is injected effectively sweeps the formation for remaining petroleum. This gas displaces the oil and pushes it to the wellbore, where it is collected. Gas injection is also used to dispose of unwanted gas production at an oil reservoir. Flaring of natural gas is discouraged and even against the law in some countries. Secondary recovery techniques like gas injection can be used to recover about 20-40% of the original gas or oil reserves.
Tertiary recovery methods are used when it is profitable to extract oil and oil prices are high. In addition, these methods are used when secondary recovery methods are not sufficient to extract the oil reserves present underground.
