Many thought that the demand for oil and gas jobs would start to decline as inventory levels reached new highs. Demand, however, has remained high, almost in spite of the naysayers. Those who predicted a decline over looked one key fact. No matter the economic conditions, skilled labor will always be in demand. Even now, companies such as Halliburton Oil and Gas are on the lookout for highly skilled workers.

Geoscientists, Engineers, Supervisors, and Drillers

The search continues for new deposits of oil and gas all around the globe. This has created a huge demand for geoscientists of all kinds, especially geologists and geophysicists. Geoscientists are involved in both the search for oil and the initial ground work once a source has been found. The engineers, supervisors, and drillers are those who actually take part in the drilling operations. Engineers who specialize in drilling are in particularly short supply and demand for their services is huge.

Subsea and Subsurface, and Pipeline Engineers

Underwater operations carry more uncertainty and risk, but many consider them more rewarding than traditional land-based drilling. Huge deposits of oil and gas can be found offshore. Knowing this, many oil and gas companies are rushing to stake their claims. Subsea and Subsurface engineers manage the implementation and maintenance of the tools and equipment used offshore or underwater. Pipeline engineers oversee the miles and miles of pipeline that stretch from the rigs at sea.

Marine Specialists and Maintenance Technicians

Marine specialists keep up the huge fleets of the oil and gas companies. These vessels are used around the clock and require constant upkeep. They are used to distribute much of the oil and gas that is produced offshore. They also deliver all the supplies that the offshore workers depend on.

Marine maintenance technicians work to keep the rigs and platform up and running. The harsh conditions often found offshore can play havoc with even the toughest devices. It is the job of the marine maintenance technician to make sure the mechanical and electrical components on their rigs and platforms are up to the task.

Heavy Equipment Operators

Much of the heavy equipment used in the oil and gas industries requires specific training and licensing. Take oil field truck drivers for instance. They have to pass demanding tests and have specific certifications to deliver the supplies and equipment to the various oil wells and pumping stations.
Crane operators are another important example. Crane operators have to be licensed just like the truck drivers, and much of the equipment used out in the fields has to be lifted into place.

Despite the predictions of some, demand for many jobs in the oil and gas industry has not decreased. The industry continues to grow, and those with skills in any of the areas mentioned above will be highly sought after for some time.
