Obtaining Employment As A Civil Engineer
The need for civil engineers is expected to increase. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of civil engineers needed is expected to increase as the population expands. It is anticipated the yearly rate for civil engineering jobs will increase 19 percent or more until 2020. This is a rate of growth that is more than the average for most jobs. In the oil and gas industry, a civil engineer will be responsible for building needed facilities. They may be called upon to design and confirm proper modification to operating civil or structural facilities. There are many things to consider when trying to obtain a position as a civil engineer.
Engineering Degree
One of the first things is to earn a civil engineering degree. At the very least, an employer will want to see a bachelor’s degree. There are engineering programs designed to help students obtain employment after earning their civil engineering bachelor’s degree. Providing an opportunity to obtain entry-level positions for their civil engineering graduates is part of these programs.
Graduate Degrees
An engineering program designed to prepare someone for a graduate degree will teach more theory during the initial four years. When this initial part finished, student will then begin working toward their graduate degree. This graduate degree will teach the student how to manage some highly technical projects. Many of these types of degrees are taught at an accelerated rate.
Internships
It is important while in school to participate in an intern program. Being an intern for a public or civil engineering organization is a way to make important contacts. This is also a way to get valuable work experience. This is a way to successfully network and find out about potential civil engineering jobs. An internship could be a good fit with a person’s chosen career path.
Specialization
It’s important to become a specialist within the field of civil engineering. These specialties could include everything from architectural engineering to structural, water, transportation and more. It is important to take courses in the specialized field once it has been determined.
American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)
It is beneficial to join the ASCE or another professional engineering organization such as the Institution of Civil Engineers. These organizations are able to connect people who are working in the civil engineering field. There is a local chapter of an engineering organization in every state.
Relocate
It is important a person be willing to relocate to an area where civil engineering jobs are readily available. Cities with a large growth in population may be a good place. A city with a substantial amount of Recovery Act money will have many openings for engineers. Research which state departments are going to spend significant amounts of money for development. Governments hire over 11 percent of engineers.
Skills
Civil engineers are desired by many areas of industry for their technical knowledge as well as subject specific understanding. A person needs to show they have the necessary grasp of mathematics, technology, and science. They will need to have skills that enable them to create, design and efficiently build structures. A company will depend on a civil engineers to have the necessary training required to use the available resources and techniques.
