Structural Engineers Conduct Research To Address Safety Concerns In Buildings
Structural engineers and researchers develop innovative methods to construct stable structures that can withstand the forces of nature. They conduct experiments to test the durability of various types of structures and make recommendations based on their observations to improve the stability of the buildings.
Role Of Structural Engineers To Design Safe Structures
Structural engineers are hired by oil and gas companies to design the equipment, pipelines, oil rig structures and even refineries. They play a critical role in ensuring the smooth functioning of oil rig operations.
As Brock explains in this article,
“A structural engineer is typically part of the planning process when a large building or structure is being built. In the oil and gas industry, structural engineers may help to design pieces of equipment, oil pipelines, or even whole refineries. A structural engineer’s primary responsibility is ensuring that structural designs pass safety standards and will be able to withstand stress. Structural engineers must have a strong knowledge of soil, construction materials, geometry, and physics.”
Buildings Having Open Spaces Are Vulnerable
The findings of the research conducted by a team of researchers at California indicate that buildings having open spaces at the street level are vulnerable and may collapse in the event of a natural calamity like an earthquake.
In a recent article, Colorado State University engineering professor John van de Lindt reiterates:
“Earthquakes are particularly damaging to buildings with open spaces at street level because they collapse – the first-floor parking makes the building structurally weak and soft. There are tens of thousands of these multi-family buildings throughout California and much of the U.S., making this a serious safety issue.”
The team of researchers tested different types of earthquake retrofits on a 44,000-square-foot building that was constructed for the purpose of testing. These retrofits improved the stability of the building, increasing the safety of the structure, making it fit for people to stay.
Structural engineers have conducted research to improve the stability and durability of building structures and found that earthquake retrofits can help in ensuring stability of building structures, in spite of incidents of natural calamity.
Candidates who wish to work in the field of structural engineering should have a passion for innovation and earn a degree from a reputed institution. They can then log on to the website of SWWR to apply for structural engineering jobs in the oil and gas industry.
